The ability to perform a Caesarean section is a measure of how well equipped a country is to provide surgical care. However, in certain countries, the rate of Cesarean section is high above WHO recommendations. The Global Surgery Team is looking at the rates of Cesarean sections in various countries around the world, focusing particularly on the Nicaraguan healthcare system, where the Cesarean section rate is nearly double the WHO recommended level. The aim is to understand the underlying factors for such a high rate and to provide recommendations to tackle the issue.
